STATEHOUSE (Oct. 1, 2021) Terre Haute's Marlene Lu was among 21 older Indiana residents honored with this year's Golden Hoosier Award for her volunteer service in the community, according to State Reps. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute) and Alan Morrison (R-Brazil).

Lu has served on the boards of several community, state and national organizations including Downtown Terre Haute Inc., Arc of Vigo County, Indiana Freedom Trails and the Society of Government Meeting Professionals. She's also an advocate of employing disabled Hoosiers. Lu had a key role in establishing The Arc of the U.S.'s Erskine Green Institute in Muncie, which trains citizens with disabilities in the hospitality and food service industries.

"Service-minded Hoosiers like Marlene play important roles in our community," Heaton said. "Many charities and local organizations rely on their help to carry out their missions. Marlene is deserving of this recognition for her efforts to make Terre Haute and the state of Indiana a great place to call home."

Morrison said the Golden Hoosier Award was established in 2008 to honor older Hoosiers whose volunteer work and commitment to their communities have made a positive impact. To be eligible, nominees must be age 65 or older and have volunteered for at least the past three years.

"There are so many who just need a little help to overcome a temporary obstacle," Morrison said. "Marlene and others demonstrate that a selfless work ethic and advocating for others is something all of us can aspire to."

The award is presented by Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch in partnership with the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, and is the highest honor given to Hoosier seniors. To date, more than 260 citizens have received the Golden Hoosier Award.

This year's Golden Hoosier Award recipients were honored through a video ceremony, which can be viewed at in.gov/lg.
