STATEHOUSE (Dec. 21, 2020) – Local communities recently received more than $1.6 million in state matching grants for road and bridge improvements, according to State Reps. Karen Engleman (R-Georgetown) and Steve Davisson (R-Salem).

Over 240 Indiana cities, towns and counties received a combined total of more than $101 million through the Community Crossings Matching Grant program, which was expanded through a 2017 law supported by Engleman and Davisson. Grants are made available through the Indiana Department of Transportation.

"Maintaining our roads and bridges is essential, but these projects can put a strain on local budgets," Engleman said. "These grants allow communities to complete much-needed projects and can free up funds for other services."

Harrison County received $1 million for local road and bridge projects. In addition, the following local communities received matching grants:

  • Corydon $168,059;
  • Crandall $148,543;
  • Mauckport $227,208; and
  • Palmyra $79,713.

"Every dollar counts, and local governments may not have the resources to fully fund larger projects," Davisson said. "These grants continue to help us maintain our roadways without stretching budgets beyond their means."

According to Engleman, this funding can be used for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements, guardrail replacements and signage. Smaller municipalities must provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while large communities must provide a 50 percent match.

In total, Davisson said more than $830 million has been distributed for local road projects through the Community Crossings program. State law requires annually that 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer.
