STATEHOUSE (July 24, 2023) – Area legislators recently received interim study committee appointments and will take a deep dive into issues facing Hoosiers as they prepare for the next legislative session in January.
Lawmakers serve on interim committees throughout the summer and fall to examine policy topics, gather public input and recommend potential legislation.
State Rep. Bob Cherry (R-Greenfield) will serve as a member of the Interim Study Committee on Fiscal Policy. He will also serve on the State Budget Committee, Indiana White River State Park Development Commission and as chair the State Fair Advisory Committee.
"Interim meetings with policy experts, the public and legislators have resulted in legislation that's really helped propel Indiana's economy and Hoosier families forward," Cherry said. "As a member of the fiscal policy committee, I look forward to reviewing and working on important issues related to the increasing cost of higher education and our state's workforce programs."
State Rep. Chris Jeter (R-Fishers) will serve as a member of the Interim Study Committee on Corrections and Criminal Code. He will also serve on the Probate Code Study Commission and the Indiana Uniform Law Commission.
"There are hundreds of bills filed each session and a short amount of time to vet them," Jeter said. "These study committees provide the opportunity to take a deep dive into important issues, and this year we'll begin a large-scale review of our state's criminal behavior, sentencing, incarceration and treatment."
State Rep. Cory Criswell (R-Middletown) will serve as a member of Interim Study Committee on Roads and Transportation.
"Indiana is already ahead of the curve when it comes to quality infrastructure," Criswell said. "This summer the roads committee will look into a number of issues like how we can reduce and prevent traffic fatalities, and how overweight loads impact our state's infrastructure."
Members of the public are welcomed to attend and testify at committee hearings, which typically occur at the Statehouse in Indianapolis. Hearings are also livestreamed and archived online at iga.in.gov, where committee calendars and meeting agendas are posted.
