Hall: Veterans Day - Recognizing those who risk it all for freedom

Every year on Nov. 11, we pause to recognize the men and women who have worn the uniform and risked their lives for our great country. Veterans Day is more than just a date on the calendar – it's a reminder of the courage, sacrifice and strength it takes to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day.

Here in Indiana, we take that responsibility to remember seriously. Our state has long been home to those who step up when duty calls.

Indiana's contributions to our nation's defense are woven into our history. At the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in downtown Indianapolis, just steps from the Statehouse, a memorial honors thousands of Hoosier veterans, reminding us that service is not abstract, but personal and not without sacrifice. It's the story of our neighbors, friends and families.

Throughout history, Hoosiers have always answered the call to fight for America's future and the freedoms we cherish. Sammy L. Davis, often referred to as the "real Forrest Gump," moved to Indiana in high school where he later enlisted in the U.S. Army in Indianapolis. A medal of honor recipient, Sammy showed extraordinary courage and bravery in Vietnam. While wounded he continued to fight to save his fellow soldiers. Hoosier astronaut and Air Force veteran Gus Grissom pushed the boundaries of exploration as one of America's first men in space. A World War II and Korean War veteran, Grissom received the Distinguished Flying Cross and was a part of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo projects at NASA. Col. Eli Lilly and President Benjamin Harrison are also among the many Hoosiers who've stepped forward to serve when times called.

Today, brave Hoosier men and women continue that tradition of service and sacrifice. Cpl. Humberto Sanchez of Logansport made the ultimate sacrifice. He was one of our American heroes tragically killed during military and refugee evacuation efforts in Afghanistan back in 2021.

On Veterans Day, our gratitude must go beyond a brief acknowledgement. We should listen to veterans' stories, support their families and ensure they have access to care and the opportunities and resources they've earned.

To all those who've served and continue to serve, their families and loved ones – thank you. We honor you not just one day, but always.
