The governor recently signed State Rep. Jim Lucas' (R-Seymour) legislation into law to create the state's first-ever medal of honor for first responders.
Lucas said he authored the legislation after being contacted by the Jackson County Sheriff's Department and determining the state did not offer an award to recognize first responders who were injured or died while on duty.
"Whether its firefighters, emergency medical services or law enforcement, these Hoosiers face innumerous hazards and dangers, and they make countless sacrifices," said Lucas, a member of the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee. "This medal is a way to recognize these Hoosiers for their service and willingness to go above and beyond to help Indiana and its people."
The new law will create the Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor to recognize firefighters, emergency medical responders, law enforcement and others for their "gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of the Indiana first responder's life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an act of public service." Apart from first responders, the award could also be given to the recipient's next of kin.
Lucas said through the new law, The Indiana Department of Homeland Security will be charged with developing eligibility criteria, administering the application process and receiving nominations. It would also be possible for the medal to be presented by Indiana's governor during a public ceremony.
