STATEHOUSE (April 16, 2026) – The governor recently ceremonially signed into law legislation sponsored by State Rep. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point) to expand jury duty exemptions to include new breastfeeding mothers.
Olthoff said breastfeeding mothers can face health risks when not given proper accommodation while serving jury duty. To reduce risk and support new mothers, Senate Enrolled Act 139 expands jury duty exemptions to include mothers with a child less than a year old who are breastfeeding.
"New mothers face many challenges and time constraints as they navigate parenthood," Olthoff said. "Breastfeeding mothers also face health risks if they are not given proper accommodation, which may not be possible during jury service. This new law eases undo stress and concerns of nursing mothers by allowing them to be exempt from jury duty during the first year of parenthood."
SEA 139 passed the General Assembly unanimously this legislative session.
