STATEHOUSE (April 20, 2026) – The governor recently ceremonially signed into law legislation sponsored by State Rep. Martin Carbaugh (R-Fort Wayne) to strengthen life and career readiness for Hoosier students.
Senate Enrolled Act 88 requires Indiana schools to teach students about the importance of earning at least a high school diploma, pursuing additional workforce training, securing full-time employment and delaying parenthood until marriage as part of existing instruction. Carbaugh notes that this new law also recognizes the Classic Learning Test as a college entrance exam alongside the SAT and ACT, expanding options for students to demonstrate readiness for higher education.
Carbaugh said the legislation strengthens long-term opportunities for Indiana students by encouraging both academic achievement and workforce preparedness while also expanding flexibility in college admissions.
"This new law helps ensure students are prepared not just for graduation, but for life after high school," Carbaugh said. "By reinforcing the importance of education, work readiness and personal responsibility, and by expanding college entrance options, we are giving Hoosier families more tools for success."
Carbaugh said SEA 88 supports a broader effort to improve student outcomes and ensure Indiana’s education system is aligned with the needs of both employers and higher education institutions.
