STATEHOUSE (April 21, 2026) – Gov. Mike Braun recently ceremonially signed into law legislation authored by State Rep. Jim Pressel (R-Rolling Prairie) to crack down on illegal immigrants holding Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDLs) in Indiana.
Seven people in Indiana have been killed in traffic incidents caused by illegal immigrants holding CDLs in the last eight months. Pressel said House Enrolled Act 1200 cracks down on dangerous drivers by requiring all nondomiciled drivers to hold H-2A, H-2B or E-2 nonimmigrant status in order to receive and maintain a CDL and demonstrate English proficiency, ensuring they understand traffic signs and law enforcement safety instruction.
As of April 1st, all CDLs held by nondomiciled drivers without approved work visas were revoked in Indiana under the new law. Pressel's legislation makes Indiana a national leader as the first state to take action on this issue.
"Indiana is refusing to allow illegal drivers to continue to endanger Hoosier motorists," Pressel said. "This new law is taking decisive action to ensure safety is a top priority on our roadways."
Individuals who present false records or lack proper documentation for their CDL will face a Level 6 felony and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles can revoke licenses of illegal immigrants. Businesses that hire illegal aliens to drive commercial vehicles can also face civil penalties up to $50,000.
