STATEHOUSE (Aug. 16, 2024) – Gov. Eric Holcomb on Thursday ceremonially signed into law legislation authored by State Rep. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point) to crack down on misleading political ads.
With artificial intelligence freely available on websites and apps to alter images, audio and video to create misleading ads, Olthoff authored House Enrolled Act 1133 to require a disclaimer on fabricated political ads to further protect Indiana's elections.
"With advancements in AI, not all fabricated ads are easy to spot," Olthoff said. "These disclaimers will protect Hoosier voters from the dangers of being misled and promote transparency in the election process."
Olthoff said under this law, which took effect in early spring, a civil action can be brought against those responsible for paying for or sponsoring fake content that does not include a disclaimer. This includes AI-generated or digitally altered media such as audio, video or images of a candidate used in campaign communication and not made with the person's consent.
