STATEHOUSE (May 31 , 2023) Gov. Eric Holcomb recently ceremonially signed into law legislation authored by State Rep. Bob Cherry (R-Greenfield) to help improve Indiana's airports, including in Greenfield and nearby Anderson.
Cherry said his legislation simply eases eligibility requirements for Indiana's locally and municipally owned airports to receive more support through the state's Airport Development Grants, which are primarily funded by excise tax paid on aviation fuel. State matching grant dollars can be used for items like general improvements, runway extensions and fuel services.
"Indiana's airports are second-to-none, and it's important to capitalize on their success and help them play to their strengths on the regional and national scale," Cherry said. "Aviation is a crucial piece of Indiana's economic growth, and I'm excited to see Hoosier airports get the help they need to excel."
Under House Enrolled Act 1069, certain airports can qualify for a matching grant by providing at least 25 percent of the funding versus the minimum 50 percent match that's currently required. Cherry said this is good news for airports like the Indianapolis Regional Airport located in Greenfield and the Anderson Municipal Airport as they could more easily finance improvement projects.
Indiana's newly passed state budget, co-authored by Cherry, includes a $26 million investment for airport improvements. He said strategic, one-time investments in Hoosier airports can make the difference in helping modernize and upgrade their capabilities.
