STATEHOUSE (March 23, 2017) – State Rep. Randy Frye’s (R-Greensburg) bill ensuring that service members who are also employed by the state receive fair compensation and are granted time off when called to duty could soon be law.
“Citizen soldiers bring many skills to the workforce,” Frye said. “They follow instructions, are respectful and have qualities that make a good leader. Oftentimes, they acquire specific training that benefits employers. As more and more military veterans are hired by state agencies, we need to have universal guidelines in place to handle when an employee is called to active duty.”
Under House Bill 1324, members of the Indiana National Guard or a reserve component of the United States Armed Forces would be able to take a leave of absence from their citizen, state agency jobs without being required to lose time or compensation while on active duty. The compensation would be the amount that is equal to the difference between the military member’s active duty military pay and the salary they receive from their citizen job.
“Hoosier employers want to hire military members, and they strive to treat them with the upmost respect,” Frye said. “With this proposal, more than 100 state agencies will have clear guidance as how to handle these situations. We must also show support for those who join the military and place their lives on the line to protect us. They signed up to serve, and we need to make sure they can do so without taking a financial hit.”
