STATEHOUSE (April 7, 2017) — State Rep. Randy Frye (R-Greensburg) and State Sen. Chip Perfect (R-Lawrenceburg) today honored several locally owned family farms for being in operation for more than 100 years.

The Deniston and Evans farms, located in Decatur County, were recognized at the Statehouse with Hoosier Homestead awards for 150 years of family farm ownership. The Deniston farm has been in operation since 1866 and the Evans farm has been in operation since 1834. Both received sesquicentennial awards.

The Jesse Donald Meinders farm, located in Ripley County, has been in operation since 1878 and received the centennial award.

“Without farm families, Indiana wouldn’t be the economic success it is today,” Frye said. “Our farmers, especially those who have been putting food on our tables for the last century, deserve to be recognized for their continuous work year in and year out.”

“Indiana has a rich agricultural history,” Perfect said. “I am thankful to these families for their dedication and hard work that has kept these farms in the family for over 100 years. I commend them on this truly remarkable feat, and am thankful for the contributions they have made to our communities.”

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes farms that have been owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more.

Two awards ceremonies are held each year, in spring and summer, to commemorate the achievements of farmers across the state. For more information on the Hoosier Homestead Award Program, visit www.in.gov/isda/2337.htm.
