STATEHOUSE (March 28, 2017)  State Rep. Randy Frye (R-Greensburg) at the Statehouse this week led the Indiana House of Representatives in honoring a local hero who saved a fellow Hoosier’s life by performing CPR.

On Jan. 6, Jean Ann Harcourt’s heart suddenly stopped beating while she was having lunch in Milroy. Sam Maggard, who happened to be in the restaurant, performed CPR on Harcourt for more than 30 minutes until emergency medical technicians arrived on the scene. Harcourt was quickly rushed to Rushville Memorial Hospital and later life-lined to St. Vincent Heart Hospital in Indianapolis. Doctors noted the importance of Maggard’s CPR expertise and his administration of it in saving Harcourt’s life.

“Without Sam’s quick response, Jean Ann wouldn’t be here with us today,” Frye said. “After 26 years as a first responder, I’ve seen how effective CPR can be, and I urge all Hoosiers to become familiar with CPR and its life-saving potential.”

House Resolution 46, which passed unanimously, commended Maggard for his ability to quickly analyze the situation and administer CPR to Harcourt for an extended amount of time until first responders arrived.

According to the American Heart Association, more than 350,000 Americans suffer from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest a year, and roughly 90 percent of those people die. Administering CPR can double and even triple, the chances of a person’s survival if it is performed within the first few minutes of cardiac arrest.

The resolution also urged all Hoosiers to learn the proper way to administer CPR. Many local hospitals and the YMCA offer CPR training. To learn more, visit www.heart.org.
