The state offers multiple free resources available through a phone call or the click of a mouse. These resources can help with finding a job, locating unclaimed property or registering for a hunting license, among other things. With Indiana’s unemployment rate at 3.2 percent, which is below the national average and our neighboring states, more Hoosiers are working now than ever before. We need to keep this momentum going forward, and there are numerous resources for both employers and those looking for a job or career change.
WorkOne provides valuable information, training, unemployment insurance, tax credits and much more. Locally, there are WorkOne locations in Greensburg, Lawrenceburg and North Vernon. WorkOne can also be accessed online at www.in.gov/dwd/WorkOne/. By visiting this website, you can start the process of finding a new or better job, access job training resources and get information to help you succeed in today’s job market.
Living in rural, Southeast Indiana, we have easy access to hunting, fishing and boating. I encourage brushing up on water safety before swimming or boating this summer. The Indiana Department of National Resources provides online hunting and boating certification along with safety tips at www.in.gov/dnr/.
This year, I voted in support of expanding services for the state’s 211 helpline. Indiana 211 is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing information and referral services 24 hours a day, seven days a week to those who dial 2-1-1. This telephone service provides easy access to resources and assistance for those in need, and is a helpful way to aid Hoosiers in finding food banks, affordable housing, medical transportation, occupational and vocational training, and workforce reentry programs, as well as obtaining prescriptions and connecting with those who can help with mental health issues.
Indiana is home to many veterans that have fought for our freedom. These veterans have earned state and federal benefits, but may not be aware or know where to find resources offered to them and their families. Each county in Indiana has a veteran service officer who assists with veteran issues, jobs and benefits by working closely with the Indiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs, United States Department of Veterans Affairs and various veteran service organizations. Hoosiers through the state’s unclaimed property program. In our area of the state there is $27 million in unclaimed property. You might have funds with your name on it from forgotten accounts, safe deposit boxes, securities, trusts, utilities, lost checks, court deposits, insurance claims, mineral interest and wages. Visit www.indianaunclaimed.gov to see if you have money or property waiting to be claimed.
