STATEHOUSE (April 19, 2016) – State Rep. Randy Frye (R-Greensburg) today addressed the Indiana Motor Truck Association (IMTA) on laws passed by the Indiana General Assembly in the 2016 session.
At IMTA’s Spring Transportation Summit, in Indianapolis, Frye detailed the state’s short-term plan to sustain and improve Indiana’s roads and infrastructure.
Frye said the state will direct $186 million upfront to a local road and bridge matching grant account. The law also redirects 1.5 cents of the 7 cents of sales tax on gasoline to the matching account as a source of ongoing funding and codifies the current equivalent of one cent already being dedicated to road funding. About $328 million will go toward state road and bridge preservation and maintenance over the next two years.
This new law also creates a task force, which will conduct a deep-dive study this summer into state and local road funding needs and options.
“The IMTA is the voice of our state’s trucking industry, so its vital policymakers understand and work to meet their needs,” Frye said. “As a member of the House Committee on Roads and Transportation, it is an honor to give insight on the progress our state is making to keep our roads maintained, as they are a key factor in our economic growth.”
According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, 80 percent of Indiana’s manufactured goods are transported on the state’s highways.
Frye said in addition to the funding provided by this new law, about $505 million in local option income tax reserves currently held by the state will be returned to local units with $330 million dedicated to roads.
