And just like that, the Indiana General Assembly has finished for the 2018 session. From beginning to end, representatives have worked hard to pass laws beneficial for everyone back home in our districts. Sine die was anything but boring, however we are all happy that a majority the of House’s agenda bills became law.
As I had mentioned early on during the process, passing legislation addressing the state’s school funding has been a priority for legislators. House Enrolled Act 1001 requires the budget agency to transfer necessary funds from the K-12 state Tuition Reserve Account to the Indiana general fund to cover the K-12 state tuition distribution. Both the House and the Senate were adamant about providing the best education for our students so approving this piece of legislation was a success.
To better connect Hoosier employers with potential employees, lawmakers passed House Enrolled Act 1002 and Senate Enrolled Act 50 to improve Indiana’s workforce. Both bills focus on expanding Next Level Jobs programs and offer grants for education and skills training. Senate Enrolled Act 50 assigns a study committee to determine administrative barriers and the cost of transporting students to workforce related programs. In House Enrolled Act 1002, the Legislative Services Agency will review the Indiana workforce development system and determine if state funding is being directed into successful programs.
I am beyond happy to announce that Senate Enrolled Act 52 passed this week. After countless hours of work, Hoosiers will now have the option of using CBD oil to treat several medical conditions with little to no side effects. It has been a very difficult and emotional journey but I know that this legislation will bring peace to families that need CBD oil to provide comfort and decrease dependency on opioids. The testimony from parents and patients alike has made this battle worth it and I cannot think of a better way to end my final session here at the Statehouse.
It has been an honor and privilege to serve House District 23. I have enjoyed meeting my constituents and I will continue to stay in touch as I finish my term. Remember, it’s your state government, participate in it.
