STATEHOUSE (Jan. 16, 2020) – Area lawmakers are encouraging Hoosier students interested in state government to participate in the Indiana House Page Program during the upcoming 2020 legislative session.
According to State Rep. Martin Carbaugh (R-Fort Wayne), students ages 13 to 18 can spend a day at the Statehouse in Indianapolis assisting House legislators and staff, and touring the governor’s office, the Indiana Supreme Court and the House and Senate chambers.
“The page program is a great way for middle and high school students to learn about the legislative process and how our state government works,” Carbaugh said. “I always enjoy having pages during session. I learn from them, while they learn about our government. It is really a neat opportunity.”
State Rep. Dave Heine (R-Fort Wayne) said it is also an opportunity to witness the legislative process in person, including debates on various proposals for new laws.
“Being able to understand what happens at the Statehouse is an excellent opportunity for all Hoosiers, especially students,” Heine said. “This is a great educational experience and students should take advantage.”
State Rep. Bob Morris (R-Fort Wayne) said student pages receive an excused absence from school and groups can participate together.
“Whether it’s one single student or an entire group, the experience makes the journey to the Statehouse more than worthwhile,” Morris said. “Sometimes it is easier to gather a few friends or a large group to make travel arrangements more manageable. With limited openings, I encourage interested students to apply soon.”
Students are responsible for their own lunch expenses and transportation to and from the Statehouse. Opportunities to serve as a page include Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays during the legislative session, which concludes March 14.
