Fine: Judge Calvin D. Hawkins receives Indiana's highest honor

STATEHOUSE – State Representatives Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron) and Bill Fine (R-Munster) presented a Sagamore of the Wabash award to Lake Superior Court Judge Calvin D. Hawkins. Presented only to Hoosiers who have made significant contributions to the state, the Sagamore award is the highest honor the governor can bestow.

“Judge Hawkins is a great asset to our community. His determination to help others succeed is commendable and best shown through the many initiatives he has championed, such as the ‘It’s Cool to Stay in School’ program. He has also serves as the president of the board of directors of Indiana Legal Services which provides low-income citizens with legal assistance. It is an honor to know Judge Hawkins and to present him with this high award,” said Rep. Fine.

Judge Hawkins has been serving the Northwest Indiana courts since 2007 and created the “It’s Cool to Stay in School” program. He plays a main role in the program, which encourages high school students to graduate, by raising money and volunteering his time.

“I am honored to present this prestigious award to Judge Hawkins for his efforts to support and keep children in school throughout Northwest Indiana,” said Rep. Aylesworth. “I’m confident his passion and contributions will continue to impact future generations.”

The Sagamore of the Wabash is the highest honor from the governor’s office and is given to a person who displays, “Humanity in Living, Loyalty in Friendship, Wisdom in Council and Inspiration in Leadership.”

Rep. Aylesworth represents House District 11, serving portions of Lake and Porter counties.
