Elkhart County legislators: Unclaimed property may be waiting for you

STATEHOUSE (Aug. 24, 2020) – With about $570 million in unclaimed property available, area lawmakers say Hoosiers should visit IndianaUnclaimed.gov today to see if money is waiting for them.

According to the Indiana Attorney General's Office, unclaimed property can come from any financial asset with no activity by its owner for an extended period of time like unclaimed wages or commissions, savings and checking accounts, stock dividends, insurance proceeds, underlying shares, customer deposits or overpayments, certificates of deposit, credit balances, refunds, money orders and safe deposit box contents. It does not include abandoned vehicles, real estate or stolen property.

"It is not uncommon for people to forget about open accounts or even paychecks during times of transition, like moving or changing jobs," said State Rep. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart). "That's exactly why Indiana Unclaimed exists, to help Hoosiers easily get their property back in their own hands."

Hoosiers can visit IndianaUnclaimed.gov or call 866-IN-CLAIM to see if they have money waiting to be claimed. State Rep. Curt Nisly (R-Milford) encourages Hoosiers to check their names along with the names of family members and friends.

"Indiana Unclaimed helps return property directly back to Hoosiers, for free," Nisly said. "Some bad actors may try to call or text pretending to be from the government and offer to send you unclaimed money for a fee. Do not fall for this scam and contact Indiana's Unclaimed Property Division directly if you believe you have assets to claim."

The organization holding the potential unclaimed property makes every effort to contact the owner and establish activity through an online login, written correspondence, a withdrawal or deposit, or an update to personal information. If these attempts do not produce activity, the asset is reported to the state of the owner’s last known address.

"Indiana Unclaimed returns about $1 million back to Hoosiers each week," said State Rep. Christy Stutzman (R-Middlebury). "During a time where many of us are looking for some extra cash, there is no reason to delay going online and seeing if there is money of yours to be claimed."

Stutzman said more than $30 million has been returned to Hoosiers so far this year.
