STATEHOUSE (Dec. 16, 2024) – Elkhart County legislators recently received appointments to serve on key House standing committees at the Statehouse.
House standing committee appointments are made by the Indiana House Speaker biennially after the November election and are in effect for the duration of members' two-year terms. State Rep. David Abbott (R-Rome City) was appointed as vice chair of the House Government and Regulatory Reform Committee and will serve as a member of the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Employment, Labor and Pensions Committee.
"Government operations should prioritize serving the public and promoting transparency," Abbott said. "As vice chair, I will continue working to eliminate regulatory obstacles and advocate for Hoosiers."
State Rep. Joanna King (R-Middlebury) will serve as a member of the House Courts and Criminal Code Committee, House Government and Regulatory Reform Committee and House Public Health Committee.
"I look forward to diving into a number of issues in my district and across our state as we prepare for the legislative session," King said. "We will continue working to find solutions to lower health care costs and provide additional support for our public safety officials."
State Rep. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart) will serve as chair of the House Government and Regulatory Reform Committee, and as a member of the House Local Government Committee and House Environmental Affairs Committee.
"Through the House Government and Regulatory Reform Committee, we must continue providing transparency to the public and ensure efficient state services," Miller said. "I will continue to work hard to cut red tape for Hoosiers, and I look forward to representing my district at the Statehouse."
State Rep. Tim Wesco (R-Osceola) was reappointed as chair of the House Elections and Apportionment Committee and will serve as a member of the House Natural Resources Committee and House Utilities, Energy and Telecommunications Committee. Wesco said committees are responsible for vetting bills, including hearing public testimony and considering amendments.
"Election security is important, and it's critical that we maintain voter confidence each election cycle," Wesco said. "As we get set for the legislative session, I look forward to diving into these issues and representing my district at the Statehouse."
House lawmakers are scheduled to convene at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 8 for the first day of the 2025 legislative session. Hoosiers can visit iga.in.gov to find legislation, view calendars, and watch committee meetings and session.
