STATEHOUSE (Sept. 5, 2023) – Local lawmakers are seeking interns to join them at the Statehouse during the 2024 legislative session.

According to State Rep. David Abbott (R-Rome City), House interns will be paid $900 bi-weekly as they work in downtown Indianapolis during session, which starts in January and concludes mid-March.

"Internships are how many people launch their careers," Abbott said. "This program helps young professionals strengthen their resumes so that they stand out from other job candidates, and it opens doors to working in both the private and public sectors."

State Rep. Joanna King (R-Middlebury) said House internships are open to college students and recent graduates of all majors.

"This internship applies to anyone who wants to build on their professional skills and learn more about state government," King said. "We welcome students who are willing to work hard and learn valuable skills that will translate to any career."

Paid, spring-semester intern positions are full time, Monday through Friday, and include free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and opportunities to earn academic credits through the student's college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.

"The job market is becoming more competitive, and this internship is a great way to set yourself apart from other applicants," said State Rep. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart). "From meeting and working with state leaders to developing new skills while getting paid, this program benefits individuals on many different levels."

According to State Rep. Tim Wesco (R-Osceola), students can apply for internships in a variety of departments related to their field of study, including legislative operations, policy, and communications and media relations.

"College students and recent graduates have a great opportunity to build and develop professional skillsets and connections through a House internship," Wesco said. "Students can get involved with their state government while networking, earning college credits and getting paid."

Applications are available online at indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and are due by Oct. 31.
