STATEHOUSE (Oct. 26, 2023) – Area lawmakers encourage local college students and recent graduates to apply online for an internship at the Indiana Statehouse before the Oct. 31 deadline.
The House of Representatives offers paid spring internships to college sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent graduates of all majors. Interns will receive $900 biweekly while working at the Indiana Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis during the 2024 legislative session, which begins in January and concludes mid-March.
"Interning at the Statehouse can help you develop the skills you need for your future career path," said State Rep. David Abbott (R-Rome City). "The deadline to apply for this opportunity is at the end of the month, and it's important that you don't miss out."
State Rep. Joanna King (R-Middlebury) said interested Hoosiers should visit indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and complete the application before Oct. 31.
"Many current and former staff members, and even legislators, with the Indiana House of Representatives got their start from this internship program," King said. "Be sure to apply for this one-of-a-kind opportunity as soon as possible."
Positions are available in legislative operations where interns work directly with constituents and help track committee activity. The communications department is looking for interns to help write press releases and email newsletters, and work with social media, graphic design and audio/video production. The policy department is also in need of interns to help research, track and analyze legislation.
"This unique internship experience helps build skills that employers are looking for such as teamwork, time management and prioritization," said State Rep. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart). "Interns also come out of this program with a great understanding of how the legislature and state government operate."
Internships are full time, Monday through Friday, and include free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and opportunities to earn academic credits through the student's college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.
"Interns are an integral part of our team each session, as they work with legislators and staff while building on their skills and resumes," said State Rep. Tim Wesco (R-Osceola). "The deadline is almost here, so don’t wait to apply."
