STATEHOUSE (Dec. 15, 2022) – Area lawmakers recently received appointments to serve on key House standing committees at the Statehouse.

House standing committee appointments are made by the Indiana House Speaker biennially after the November election and are in effect for the duration of members' two-year terms. State Rep. David Abbott (R-Rome City) was reappointed as vice chair of the House Natural Resources Committee, and as a member of the House Employment, Labor and Pensions Committee, and the House Government and Regulatory Reform Committee. He was also appointed as Assistant Majority Caucus Chair, a House Republican leadership position.

"Public testimony is a very important part of the legislation process," Abbott said. "I urge anyone with a stake in possible legislation to come testify in these committees and have their voice heard."

State Rep. Joanna King (R-Middlebury) will serve as Assistant Majority Floor Leader, a House Republican leadership position. King will also be a member of the House Courts and Criminal Code Committee, the House Government and Regulatory Reform Committee, the House Public Health Committee, and the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee.

"It's an honor to be a part of the House leadership team and to serve on these committees where we'll tackle issues important to Hoosiers," King said. "From keeping our communities safe to cutting red tape for Hoosiers, I look forward to diving into these issues and representing our district at the Statehouse."

State Rep. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart) was reappointed as chair of the House Government and Regulatory Reform Committee. He will also serve as a member of the House Environmental Affairs Committee and the House Local Government Committee. Miller said committees are responsible for vetting bills, including hearing public testimony and considering amendments.

"Government operations must remain focused on providing services to the public, being transparent and responsibly managing the state's needs," Miller said. "I will continue to work hard as chair to remove bureaucratic barriers and look out for Hoosiers."

House lawmakers are scheduled to convene at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 9 for the first day of the 2023 legislative session. Hoosiers can visit iga.in.gov to find legislation, view calendars, and watch committee meetings and session.
