Note to the press: Elkhart County lawmakers provided the following statements after House and Senate lawmakers passed House Enrolled Act 1002 on Tuesday providing tax relief to hardworking Hoosiers. If signed into law, the bill will drop the state's individual income tax from 3.23% to 2.9% over seven years. Once fully phased in, Indiana would have one of the lowest income tax rates in the nation. The bill will also help lower utility bills for Hoosiers and businesses by eliminating the 1.46% Utility Receipts Tax currently paid on electricity, natural gas, water, steam, sewage and telephone bills. According to lawmakers, once both tax cuts are fully implemented, Hoosiers would save over $1 billion a year. The legislation also includes using reserves to make a one-time, $2.5 billion payment toward pre-'96 teacher pension obligations.

These tax cuts will save taxpayers over $1 billion, and I look forward to coming back to the table next session to see how we can continue to make good fiscal decisions on behalf of all Hoosiers," said State Rep. "Indiana’s revenue collections continue to outpace expectations, and we’re looking at having a more than $5 billion surplus. This is a great time for the state to responsibly return money to Hoosier taxpayers who can spend it in their local communities," said State Rep. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart).
"As the costs of everyday goods continue to climb, it's important that Indiana doesn't use its strong financial success to grow government. This responsible tax-cut package ensures Hoosiers keep more of their money, and Indiana doesn't take in more than it needs," said State Rep. Tim Wesco (R-Osceola).
