STATEHOUSE (Oct. 15, 2019) – More than $2.1 million in state matching grants will be awarded throughout Elkhart County to accelerate local road and bridge improvements, according to State Reps. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart) and Christy Stutzman (R-Middlebury).
Nearly $100 million was awarded to Indiana cities, towns and counties through the Community Crossings Matching Grant program, which is now in its fourth year. Miller said the grants are made available through the Indiana Department of Transportation as a result of a law passed by the Indiana General Assembly in 2016, and funded through the state budget.
“Thanks to strong investments in our roads over the past few years, Indiana has secured a reputation as a national leader for infrastructure,” Miller said. “These grants will be used to help make Elkhart County’s roads and bridges safer and easier for both residents and those just passing through to travel.”
As part of the program, Elkhart County will receive $1 million for local road projects, with several communities within the county also awarded grants, including:
Stutzman said grant funding can be used toward road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements, guardrail replacements and signage. Smaller municipalities must provide a match of 25% in local funds, while large communities must provide a 50% match.
“We have already seen a lot of progress on several local road projects in recent years,” Stutzman said. “We use these roads every day, and it is vital our state continues to prioritize programs like this to improve our local infrastructure.”
Since 2017, state road investment is up 50% as Indiana has dedicated $3 billion to road and bridge projects across the state.
