STATEHOUSE (April 12, 2024) – Elkhart County communities can roll forward with road and bridge projects thanks to a recent boost in state funding supported by local legislators.
A total of 252 communities across the state will receive over $207 million through Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program. Funds can be used for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements and other items.
"It's vital that our roads and bridges are safe and functioning to keep Hoosiers moving," said State Rep. David Abbott (R-Rome City). "Community Crossings is a great tool for local communities because it opens the door for additional funding, which allows for critical repairs and improvements to be made faster."
Area grant recipients include:
"These matching grant funds are a great way for locals to maximize their dollars to invest in much-needed road and bridge upgrades," said State Rep. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart). "Investing in local infrastructure is important as we work to attract more business and residents."
"The state funding from this program goes directly to communities both large and small to help with road maintenance and improvements," said State Rep. Joanna King (R-Middlebury). "I'm excited to see these projects come to fruition and for local residents to see the benefits."
To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.6 billion to improve local roads and bridges.
