STATEHOUSE (Dec. 20, 2018) – Local students who want to learn more about state government are encouraged to participate in the Indiana House Page Program during the 2019 legislative session.
“The page program is a great opportunity for students to learn more about the state legislature,” said State Rep. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart). “As a page, students help prepare the House Chamber for session, witness legislative proceedings and learn about the history of the Indiana Capitol building.”
According to State Rep. Christy Stutzman (R-Middlebury), those who are between the ages of 13 to 18 can spend a day at the Statehouse in Indianapolis helping staff and local legislators, touring government offices, and learning how state laws are made.
“Pages receive invaluable civics lessons as they witness the legislative process from the House floor,” Stutzman said. “The page program is a unique opportunity for students to experience state government firsthand, and I hope to see many participants from our community around the Statehouse this session.”
With a limited number of page positions available, State Rep. Tim Wesco (R-Osceola) said interested students should apply early to reserve a spot.
“Visiting the Statehouse is a great way to get a closer look at how elected officials serve Hoosiers at the state level,” Wesco said. “Our community has many future leaders who are already civically engaged, and I highly recommend they take advantage of this opportunity and sign up soon.”
Student pages receive an excused absence from school and groups can participate together. For more information and to sign up, visit www.indianahouserepublicans.com/pageprogram or call 800-382-9841.
The 2019 legislative session begins Thursday, Jan. 3, and must conclude by April 30.
