STATEHOUSE (Sept. 28, 2020) – Area lawmakers encourage local residents to register to vote or check their registration status before the Oct. 5 deadline using the state's online voter portal at IndianaVoters.com.
"This election will impact many issues at the local, state and federal levels for years to come," said State Rep. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart). "To cast a ballot in November, make sure you are registered now, especially if you have moved recently or haven't voted for a while."
He said Hoosiers can also go to IndianaVoters.com ahead of the deadline to verify their registration is active and update the personal information in their voter record. Once completed, registration forms can be submitted online, or printed and mailed or hand delivered to the county voter registration official or the Indiana Election Division.
"As Americans, we value our right to vote," said State Rep. Christy Stutzman (R-Middlebury). "Take these steps now to make your voice heard this November. Early voting begins the day after voter registration closes, giving Hoosiers many opportunities to vote before Election Day and avoid the lines."
To register, Indiana residents must be at least 18 years old on or before Nov. 3, have a valid Indiana Driver's License or Indiana State Identification Card, be a citizen of the United States, have lived in the same precinct for at least 30 days before Nov. 3, and not be currently imprisoned after being convicted of a crime. Those who do not have a driver's license or state ID can register to vote in person at county government centers, public assistance offices and when completing a Bureau of Motor Vehicles transaction.
"Those eligible to vote absentee should request a mail-in ballot sooner rather than later, and it can be done online through the voter portal," said State Rep. Curt Nisly (R-Milford). "Election Day is approaching, so it would also be very helpful to go online and see who is on your ballot and check out your voting location."
In-person early voting begins Oct. 6. The state is providing masks, gloves, hand sanitizer and disinfectants to local election officials to protect poll workers, election staff and voters.
