STATEHOUSE (May 26, 2021) – A pair of local students preparing to become teachers are among this year's recipients of the state's Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, according to State Reps. Sean Eberhart (R-Shelbyville) and Ryan Lauer (R-Columbus).
The scholarship program, established in 2016 through legislation supported by Eberhart, awards $7,500 annually to 200 high-achieving students who commit to teaching in the state for at least 5 years after graduating college.
"These scholarships are a great way to ease the financial burdens of college and help these students focus on working toward earning their teaching degree," Eberhart said. "It's important to have motivated, hardworking Hoosiers leading our classrooms."
More than 400 students applied, and among this year's 200 awardees are Maylee Barriger from Hauser Jr-Sr High School and Hannah Franklin from Columbus North High School.
"In addition to their parents, educators have a tremendous impact on children and help with their progress and development," Lauer said. "This scholarship will surely help Maylee and Hannah manage their college costs, and we appreciate them continuing their education in Indiana and admire their commitment to teaching."
Those qualifying for the renewable scholarship totaling up to $30,000 must graduate in the highest 20 percent of their high school class or earn a score in the top 20th percentile on the SAT or ACT.
