DeVon, Wesco: Unclaimed property may be waiting for you

STATEHOUSE (Aug. 24, 2020) – With about $570 million in unclaimed property available, State Reps. Dale DeVon (R-Granger) and Tim Wesco (R-Osceola) said Hoosiers should visit today to see if money is waiting for them.

According to the Indiana Attorney General's Office, unclaimed property can come from any financial asset with no activity by its owner for an extended period of time like unclaimed wages or commissions, savings and checking accounts, stock dividends, insurance proceeds, underlying shares, customer deposits or overpayments, certificates of deposit, credit balances, refunds, money orders and safe deposit box contents. It does not include abandoned vehicles, real estate or stolen property.

"There are millions of dollars in unclaimed property that need to be returned to the rightful owners," DeVon said. "With Indiana Unclaimed, it takes just a few minutes to search online and see if you or someone you know is listed. I hope more people check this website, so they can get that money back in their pocket."

Hoosiers can visit or call 866-IN-CLAIM to see if they have money waiting to be claimed. Wesco encourages Hoosiers to check their names along with the names of family members and friends.

"Sometimes people move or change jobs and forget about a paycheck or utility deposit," Wesco said. "Property is continually added to the database each year, so even if you did not have anything to claim before, it's a good idea to check back."

The organization holding the potential unclaimed property makes every effort to contact the owner and establish activity through an online login, written correspondence, a withdrawal or deposit, or an update to personal information. If these attempts do not produce activity, the asset is reported to the state of the owner’s last known address. Wesco said more than $30 million has been returned to Hoosiers so far this year.
