DeVon, Wesco remind local residents to complete census

STATEHOUSE (Aug. 31, 2020) – According to State Reps. Dale Devon (R-Granger) and Tim Wesco (R-Osceola), 2020 census responses are critical to future federal funding in local communities, and Hoosiers should respond now if they have not already done so.

Door-to-door visits have begun in some areas around the country to remind residents to complete their 2020 Census forms. DeVon said Indiana is currently tied with Ohio for 11th in the nation for response rate, with nearly two-thirds of Hoosier census forms submitted.

"Hoosiers have just a few more weeks to submit this essential information," DeVon said. "It takes a couple minutes to complete the census online, over the phone, or by filling out the form received in the mail and returning it. If you are one of those who haven't responded yet, I urge you do to so as soon as possible."

DeVon encourages residents to visit 2020census.gov to fill out the census online. Hoosiers can also call 844-330-2020 or mail back the questionnaire sent to households.

Census takers have begun visiting nonresponding households to ensure every resident is counted. Wesco said the census office is still waiting to hear from approximately one third of the households in St. Joseph County.

"Local funding for critical resources and programs depends on everyone filling out the census," Wesco said. "Ensuring this data is accurate and complete will help communities continue to support development efforts, schools and education, and public health and safety initiatives."

According to Wesco, chair of the House Elections and Apportionment Committee, census data also impacts the redrawing of state legislative districts, also known as redistricting, and Indiana's federal representation in the U.S. Congress.

Census workers will wear masks and follow local public health guidelines when they visit households. All census takers complete a virtual COVID-19 training on social distancing, and other health and safety protocols before beginning their work in neighborhoods.

Self-responses are due by Sept. 30, 2020.
