STATEHOUSE (April 12, 2024) – St. Joseph County and local communities can roll forward with road and bridge projects thanks to a recent boost in state funding supported by State Reps. Dale DeVon (R-Granger) and Jake Teshka (R-North Liberty).

A total of 252 communities across the state will receive over $207 million through Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program. Funds can be used for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements and other items.

"The funding from this grant program will be put to great use as we make much-needed upgrades to our roads and bridges," DeVon said. "When we invest in our local communities, we invest in our future."

Area grant recipients include:

  • New Carlisle, $664,953;
  • North Liberty, $272,775;
  • Osceola, $209,694;
  • South Bend, $1.5 million; and
  • St. Joseph County, $1.5 million.

"It's great to see the state and local governments work together to make these necessary improvements to our roadways," Teshka said. "Whether you're going to work or school, the quality of our roads matter. It's great to see Indiana step up once again and help locals stretch their dollars further so that improvements can be made."

To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.6 billion to improve local roads and bridges.
