STATEHOUSE (Jan. 27, 2022) – The Indiana House of Representatives today voted unanimously in support of legislation authored by State Rep. J. Michael Davisson (R-Salem) to honor Hoosier veterans who fought in the Afghanistan and Iraq during the war on terrorism.
House Bill 1071 would require the Indiana War Memorial Commission to propose a plan to construct a monument to honor Hoosier veterans who lost their lives while fighting in the war on terrorism. The war on terrorism is the longest war in United States history that began after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on U.S. soil and lasted until 2021. Over the 20-year conflict, more than 7,000 American military service members, including 207 Hoosiers, lost their lives.
"As a military veteran who has served overseas and lost friends in battle, it's incredibly important to remember these men and women," said Davisson, who previously served on the IWMC board of directors. "This monument would ensure the selfless sacrifice of more than 200 Hoosiers will never be forgotten."
Davisson said his bill would require the IWMC to hold five public hearings concerning the proposed monument. A meeting would be held in Indianapolis and in each of the state's four regions. The IWMC would then be required to submit a written proposal of the monument regarding the placement, model and quote.
According to Davisson, the IWMC is responsible for the financial support and maintenance of Indiana's 15 memorials that cover 25 acres.
