Note to the Press – Please include the following statement from State Rep. J. Michael Davisson (R-Salem) in regards to citizens' concerns over the Salem Common Council's new ordinance establishing minimum standards for property maintenance:
STATEHOUSE (Aug. 29, 2022) – “Some Salem residents could be negatively impacted by the recently passed city ordinance establishing a property maintenance code, which includes aggressive penalties. While it's important to address local property upkeep, citizens are expressing objections to what they strongly view is an overreaching and subjective ordinance. After listening to many constituents, I contacted Salem Mayor Justin Green and we plan to ask the council to rescind the ordinance at a special called meeting Aug. 30th. We believe the council can revert back to current city code to find remedies and solutions that are equitable for all. We believe there is also an opportunity to provide incentives for property upkeep and improvements. I'll continue to work with all stakeholders and help find a reasonable solution to move Salem forward," said State Rep. J. Michael Davisson (R-Salem).
Salem Mayor Justin Green also provided the following statement:
“With much review and consideration, I want the citizens of Salem to know we are respectful of their concerns and feelings. This ordinance was not meant as a harmful tool, rather a way of enriching our city. However, I see that it has been viewed as such. Looking at the language adopted throughout this document, I fear it reads beyond the intent. I will ask the Common Council to rescind Ordinance 2022-6 on Tuesday, Aug. 30. Salem has so many assets to be proud of! Please know we want all our residents to be good neighbors, and the City of Salem seeks ways to partner with the State to help.”
