STATEHOUSE (May 18, 2022) – Johnson County students preparing to become teachers are among this year's recipients of the state's Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, according to State Reps. Michelle Davis (R-Whiteland) and John Young (R-Franklin).

The scholarship program, established in 2016 through legislation supported by the Indiana General Assembly, awards $7,500 per year to 200 high-achieving students. Recipients must commit to teaching in Indiana for a minimum of five years after graduating college. Current high school seniors or college students are eligible to apply.

"I want to congratulate these hardworking students on receiving this scholarship that will help them pursue their degree in education," said Davis, a member of the House Education Committee. "This opportunity helps these young Hoosiers get into the teaching profession and off to solid start."

More than 600 students applied, and these local students are among this year's 200 scholarship recipients:

  • Avery Arthur, Whiteland Community High School;
  • Delaney Dillard, Greenwood Christian Academy;
  • Gabriella Sherry, Franklin Community High School;
  • Grace Shepherd, Franklin Community High School; and
  • Rebecca May, Center Grove High School.

"Indiana can never have enough high-quality teachers, and these scholarships alleviate some of the costs of college and helps these students focus on getting the skills they need," Young said. "Hoosier parents want the best educators for their children, and this program helps achieve that goal."

Those qualifying for the renewable scholarship totaling up to $30,000 must graduate in the highest 20 percent of their high school class, earn a score in the top 20th percentile on the SAT or ACT or have a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
