Small businesses sponsor our local sports teams, host fundraisers for community members, provide jobs and help drive Indiana's economy. Over the last year, many have had to pivot and adapt to challenges brought on by the pandemic, and some need additional support to keep their doors open. At the Statehouse, we are working on legislation that would build on the state's existing efforts to support Hoosier jobs and our employers.
One proposal would establish the Hoosier Hospitality Small Business Restart Fund to provide grants to struggling businesses that have experienced significant losses due to the pandemic, especially those in the tourism and hospitality industries. Qualifying small businesses could receive a grant to put toward business and payroll expenses. In addition to state dollars, this program could also receive funding from federal grants, donations and other sources. The House Ways and Means Committee recently advanced this bill, which can now be considered by the full House of Representatives. Visit iga.in.gov to learn more and watch hearings live.
As we are working to provide additional support for our small businesses, there are resources currently available. The U.S. Small Business Administration recently resumed the Paycheck Protection Program, and small businesses can apply for low-interest loans through March 31, to help fund payroll costs, including benefits, and pay for mortgage interest, rent, utilities, worker protection costs related to COVID-19 and more. These loans have a five-year payback period, and initial payments can be deferred. Visit sba.gov for more information and to apply for a loan.
The Indiana Small Business Development Center also has tools to help businesses safely remain open. From information on applying for state and federal funding to resources on how to grow your business online, the ISBDC is a one-stop-shop for Hoosier small businesses. Local entrepreneurs can visit isbdc.org or contact the Central Indiana Small Business Development Center at 317-940-3919 or central@isbdc.org for support.
As a small-business owner myself, I understand the perseverance and dedication it takes to operate a businesses in the best of times. Local businesses have faced unprecedented challenges throughout the pandemic and continue to need our help. One of the best ways to support our small businesses is by shopping local whenever possible. Visit aspirejohnsoncounty.com to see a business directory and find ways to support our local job creators and entrepreneurs.
I'm focused on helping our community and state bounce back from the last year stronger than ever before. If there is ever anything I can do to support you, please contact me at h58@iga.in.gov or 317-234-9447.
