STATEHOUSE (Sept. 25, 2020)  Daviess County lawmakers encourage local college students and recent graduates looking to gain valuable work experience to apply online for a paid internship with the Indiana House of Representatives at the Statehouse in Indianapolis.

"The Indiana General Assembly is truly a melting pot of diverse backgrounds and knowledge," said State Rep. Bruce Borders (R-Jasonville). "Interning during the legislative session exposes you to different ideas and provides experiences that can be carried over to a variety of jobs."

Before the start of each legislative session, House Republicans hire interns to help legislators and staff with the increased workload. State Rep. Jeff Ellington (R-Bloomington) said positions are open to sophomores, juniors and seniors, as well as recent college graduates, and law school and graduate students.

"The legislative session is by far the busiest time of year for state lawmakers," Ellington said. "Our internship program is a great opportunity for students and recent graduates to get extensive experience working alongside legislators and have a front-row seat to see how laws are created and debated."

According to State Rep. Shane Lindauer (R-Jasper), all majors are welcome to apply online for internships in a variety of areas, including legislative operations, communications and media relations, policy and fiscal policy. Previous political or government experience is not required.

"Interning with House Republicans is a stepping stone for many students as they launch their careers," Lindauer said. "Regardless of their college major, the connections interns make and the skills they develop are invaluable. It's a great opportunity."

These full-time internships take place Monday through Friday, lasting from January through April in 2021. Interns receive biweekly compensation of $750, and can earn academic credit through their college or university. Interns are also eligible for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.

The legislature may make certain changes to the internship program due to the impacts of COVID-19 and social distancing requirements, but any adjustments will be communicated to candidates and intern hires.

Students should apply before the Oct. 31 deadline online at IndianaHouseRepublicans.com/internship.
