Over 72,000 FFA members from all 50 states recently made their way to Indianapolis for the 96th National FFA Convention & Expo, demonstrating talent and competing for titles. To welcome so many young adults to our capital city is exciting and inspiring. Thanks to youth organizations like the FFA and 4-H, young Hoosiers can explore new skills and experiences while learning about science, technology and innovation.
With over 13,000 students involved, the Indiana FFA Association is the largest youth organization in Indiana serving over 200 communities, followed by 4-H, which provides hands-on experiences to youth in all 92 counties. From public speaking and speech writing to conflict resolution and problem solving, youth agriculture programs can enrich lives and prepare the next generation of leaders.
Students enrolled in a school-based agricultural program at a 5th grade level or above can join FFA, an organization empowering students to develop their potential in leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. Young Hoosiers in third through 12th grades can also benefit from joining 4-H, a program focusing on a hands-on approach to improve confidence, independence, resilience and compassion through real-life experiences. 4-H Cloverbud programs are also offered to youth ages 5-7. 4-H partners with more than 100 public universities throughout the nation to provide opportunities to all children. In Indiana, Purdue University delivers the program through its Cooperative Extension Service.
After joining a club, members choose from a variety of individual projects based on their interests, from STEM to dog obedience. When working on projects, members set goals, learn skills to meet those goals, and then exhibit or demonstrate those skills at an event like the county fair, speaking contests or other competitions.
4-H enrollment for 2023-2024 is underway. To get involved, visit the Purdue University Extensions 4-H page or stop by local Purdue Extension offices, which are located in every county.
Growing up, I spent years in these programs developing skills that would later contribute to my career path and achievements. During my four-year involvement in FFA and 10 years in 4-H, I learned about beef care and nutrition, photography and electricity, and developed leadership and public speaking skills through competitions and events. With so many opportunities to learn and excel, I encourage Hoosier youth to get involved in organizations such as FFA and 4-H, which can really help with personal and professional development. Diving into new experiences and gaining hands-on experience can empower young Hoosiers to explore, innovate and lead.
