Criswell: Resources available to help with heating bills

Posted by: Braden Dunlap  | Tuesday, November 14, 2023

Cold weather is coming and winter is right around the corner, which means many families are turning up the heat in their homes. For Hoosiers who are already struggling to pay for utilities, they may be disconnected or fear disconnection from their energy provider. Thankfully, Indiana's Energy Assistance Program can help ease the burden for low-income Hoosiers.

Rent and mortgage payments, grocery bills and other costs can add up quickly, straining household budgets. Through EAP, Hoosiers struggling to pay for utilities can apply for a one-time annual benefit assisting with home energy payments.

To begin the process, visit in.gov/ihcda, click on "Homeowners & Renters," and create an account. This benefit does not cover all home energy expenses, so continue to pay bills regularly. These benefits are paid directly to the utility vendor to help cover your heating and electric costs. You can also go to your local service agency, which can be located by clicking here, or call 211 to get connected to help. Those who qualify for the EAP benefit cannot be disconnected from service between Dec. through March 15, 2024.

Local service agencies may take 55 days to determine if you are eligible, and after your benefit has been awarded it may take an additional 30 days for the utility company to process your benefit. Hoosiers should continue to pay their utility bills while waiting for their EAP benefit to appear on their account. If you are receiving a direct payment benefit, it could take up to 120 days from the date of approval.

Although applications for EAP are open through May 20, 2024, I encourage you to reach out now if you need assistance with these bills. Visit in.gov/ihcda to learn more about the program and start the application process.

Need additional help? By dialing 211, a free and confidential service, you can connect with a navigator to get the help you need and it's available 24/7.

Hoosier families shouldn't go cold this winter to make ends meet. If you need help connecting to resources like the EAP, please contact me by calling 317-232-9850 or by emailing h54@iga.in.gov.
