I am proud to share encouraging news from across our district as several local schools were recently recognized by the Indiana Department of Education for achieving high literacy rates on the 2025 Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination assessment. This achievement reflects the dedication of teachers, students and families who continue to prioritize literacy in the classroom.
Statewide, more than 400 schools were honored for reaching a 95% or higher passage rate on IREAD. Indiana students continue to show strong progress in early literacy with more than 87% of third graders demonstrating proficiency in reading. This marks a return to pre-pandemic levels and reflects the hard work happening in classrooms across the state.
In our district, Blue River Valley Elementary School, Westwood Elementary School and Knightstown Elementary School earned this recognition. Each of these schools achieved a high passage rate on the assessment, which measures third grade reading proficiency and helps ensure students are on track for future academic success.
In 2023, I supported House Enrolled Act 1558 to implement science of reading standards and provide targeted support for Indiana students experiencing the greatest reading challenges.
These results build on Indiana’s recent national success in reading. According to the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress rankings, Indiana placed sixth in the country for fourth and eighth grade reading. This achievement shows that our students are competing at a high level nationally and our investments in literacy are paying off.
