Each November, National Adoption Month reminds us of the power of family and the difference a loving home can make in a child’s life. I’ve seen firsthand how Hoosiers open their homes and hearts, giving children the stability and support they need to thrive.
According to the Indiana Department of Child Services, more than 1,600 children were adopted in the state last year. Still, on any given day, about 150 children remain in foster care waiting for permanent homes. Each of these children deserves the chance to grow up surrounded by comfort and love.
This year, lawmakers continued working to support vulnerable children and strengthen families. I supported a new law that is helping improve communication between state agencies, speed up court timelines and expand caregiver rights. These changes ensure children don’t have to wait unnecessarily for the protection and support they need.
I also supported a new law to ensure foster families who qualify can access Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) vouchers for their foster child to help ease the financial burden of child care. It also reserves a set number of CCDF vouchers for children who are placed with licensed foster parents.

As a dad, I’ve seen how strong family connections can shape a child’s confidence and outlook on life. That’s why I’m grateful for the Hoosiers who step up and open their homes to children in need. Their commitment shows the best of what family and community can be.
