STATEHOUSE (Feb. 13, 2017) — State Rep. Ed Clere (R-New Albany) and State Sen. Ron Grooms (R-Jeffersonville) today offered a resolution honoring the New Albany boys basketball team for winning the 2016 IHSAA class 4A state title. Head Coach Jim Shannon and members of the championship and current teams joined Clere and Grooms, respectively, on the House and Senate floors.
“Coach Shannon and his team are a credit to our community and our state, both on and off the court,” Clere said. “The team has already earned its place in history, and they aren’t finished yet.”
On March 26, 2016, the top-ranked New Albany High School Bulldogs defeated McCutcheon High School to win their second state title by the score of 62-59; the first was in 1973. The Bulldogs finished the 2015-16 season with a 27-1 record.
Romeo Langford, then a sophomore, led the team with 28 points, while Isaac Hibbard, a junior, and Sean East, a sophomore, added 17 and 10 points. Langford, now a junior, is the leading scorer in school history.
“Congratulations to the New Albany Bulldogs boys basketball team on their state championship title,” Grooms said. “I wish them continued success on their athletic and academic endeavors, and I am confident they will continue to make New Albany proud.”
Currently, New Albany has an overall record of 18-3. Clere commented on the team’s prospects for the rest of the season.
“It’s February in Indiana, and as March approaches, anything can happen.”
