STATEHOUSE (April 20, 2022) – Local communities will receive more than $1.4 million in state matching grants for road and bridge improvement projects, according to Clay County lawmakers.

In total, 223 towns, cities and counties will receive more than $107 million in state funding through the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program. Funds, awarded twice a year, are for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements, guardrail replacements and signage, and can cover material costs for chip sealing and crack filling operations.

"Community Crossings grants help ensure all Hoosier communities, no matter their size, can complete essential infrastructure projects," said State Rep. Alan Morrison (R-Brazil). "This program continues to make Indiana a leading state in maintaining its transportation network."

Area grant recipients include:

  • Clay County $1 million;
  • Brazil $189,405;
  • Clay City $217,714; and
  • Staunton $49,631.

"Keeping our roads and bridges in good working condition is necessary for continuing to move Indiana in the right direction," said State Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee. "Preserving our quality of life has made this state among the best in the Midwest to live, work and raise a family."

As part of the grant program, established in 2016 and expanded through laws supported by Morrison and Heaton, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while large communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. To date, Hoosier communities are on the receiving end of more than $1 billion in Community Crossings Matching Grants.

"Community Crossings is a prime example of what can be accomplished when state and local government work together," said State Rep. Beau Baird (R-Greencastle), also a member of the House Ways and Means Committee. "These partnerships have helped revitalize so many parts of Indiana, and will continue to do so for years to come."

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, which oversees and awards the grants, the next call for projects is expected in July. More information can be found at in.gov/indot/communitycrossings or by emailing LPAQuestions@indot.in.gov.
