STATEHOUSE (Jan. 9, 2024) – State Rep. Bob Cherry today (R-Greenfield) on the first day of the 2024 legislative session filed legislation to provide a 13th check to Indiana's nearly 100,000 retired public employees like law enforcement and teachers.
Cherry's legislation would provide a one-time, post-retirement payment designed to help cover cost-of-living gaps. Payments would be based on an employee's number of years vested in their retirement plan. Cherry said the state would use existing, dedicated funds to make one-time payments to retirees.
"We have a great opportunity to give the men and women who worked incredibly hard for our state, ensuring it runs efficiently and helping Hoosiers through our government, with some extra help, especially during a time of high inflation," Cherry said. "Indiana is in a sound place fiscally, thanks in part to the dedication of our state employees. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the House and Senate to see this legislation cross the finish line."
According to House Speaker Todd Huston (R-Fishers), House Bill 1004 is a House Republican priority bill and will be fast-tracked out the House in the first half of the legislative session.
Cherry said public employees like teachers, state excise police, gaming agents, gaming control officers, conservation officers and state police officers who are a part of Indiana’s public pension program would receive a 13th check.
