STATEHOUSE (May 28, 2020) – Cass County and local communities are eligible for more than $1.9 million to cover COVID-19-related expenses through the federal stimulus package, according to area lawmakers.

"Many communities across our state are having to bear many unexpected expenses to fight this pandemic," said State Rep. Don Lehe (R-Brookston). "Our hope is this funding will provide some relief as local governments navigate this situation."

Indiana allocated $300 million in federal funding from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economics Security Act to counties and communities for reimbursement of expenditures related to the pandemic. State Rep. Ethan Manning (R-Denver) said the funding, allocated based on population, cannot be used to replace lost tax revenue.

"From purchasing hand sanitizer to equipping our first responders with personal protective equipment, Hoosiers' health is a top priority for all communities," Manning said. "To continue reopening, local governments are in some cases supplying these materials and can seek reimbursement for those expenditures."

Cass County is eligible for $1,231,403 in reimbursement funding. In addition, State Rep. Heath VanNatter (R-Kokomo) said these local communities are eligible to receive the following amounts:

  • Galveston $41,008;
  • Logansport $575,163;
  • Onward $3,114;
  • Royal Center $27,285; and
  • Walton $33,060.

"Cass County is one of the hardest hit areas in Indiana with the COVID-19 pandemic," VanNatter said. "This funding is critical for local areas to recoup costs from buying necessary resources to keep Hoosiers safe."

The Indiana Finance Authority is in charge of implementing guidelines on how each county, city and town can use the funding, as well as compiling reimbursement requests through accepted documentation including invoices. Visit in.gov/ifa for more information.
