STATEHOUSE (March 26, 2019) – Two Carroll County family farms were recently recognized at the Statehouse for being in operation for more than 100 years, according to local legislators.
The Carnell-Brown-Stone Farm, located in Camden and in operation since 1836, received a Hoosier Homestead Sesquicentennial Award. The Childers Farm, located in Delphi and in operation since 1919, received a Hoosier Homestead Centennial Award.
“The leaps in technology and changes in the agriculture industry that Hoosier farms have seen over the last 100 years is incredible,” said State Sen. Brian Buchanan (R-Lebanon). “I greatly admire the perseverance of these families and congratulate them on this significant achievement.”
“Keeping a successful farm in the family for 100 or more years is an amazing achievement,” said State Sen. Randy Head (R-Logansport). “Generations of these families have put in the work necessary to keep their farms thriving, which has positively impacted our community and state. Congratulations to these families. You are both truly deserving of these awards.”
“Family farms are an important part of small, rural communities like ours,” said State Rep. Don Lehe (R-Brookston). “The hard work of Hoosier farmers does not go unnoticed. We are incredibly grateful for our long-time farm families and their many years of service to our community and state.”
“Farming is a way of life for many Hoosiers,” said State Rep. Heath VanNatter (R-Kokomo). “In addition to providing locally grown goods, these farms contribute to the state’s economy and support many jobs in our area.”
The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes farms that have been owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more. Families can qualify for the centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial award.
Each year, awards ceremonies are held in the spring and summer commemorating the achievements of farm families across the state. For more information on the Hoosier Homestead Award Program, visit www.in.gov/isda/2337.htm.
