STATEHOUSE (Sept. 21, 2017) — Local communities will receive state matching grants to improve roads and bridges, according to State Rep. Woody Burton (R-Whiteland).

More than $150 million was awarded to Indiana cities, towns and counties through the Community Crossings grant program, which is now in its second year. The grants are available through the Indiana Department of Transportation as a result of legislation supported by Burton in 2016.

“This grant funding will help our local governments build on the progress they have already made in improving our roads and bridges,” Burton said. “Both small and large communities will be able to stretch their dollars further on many necessary projects to help keep our roadways safe for motorists and open for commerce. As we continue to invest in our transportation infrastructure, I encourage everyone to exercise patience and drive safely through any construction zones.”

Johnson County will receive $337,013, and five local communities were also awarded grants, including Franklin ($602,894) Greenwood ($512,396), New Whiteland ($470,408), Prince’s Lake ($149,500) and Whiteland ($731,223).

Projects eligible for funding through Community Crossings include road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements, small structure replacements, guardrail replacements and signs.
