STATEHOUSE (Aug. 31, 2021) — Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray (R-Martinsville) and House Speaker Todd Huston (R-Fishers) today announced the launch of a public map-drawing portal as part of the Indiana General Assembly's efforts to gather more input on the redistricting process.
The portal, which allows Hoosiers to draw and submit their proposed new district boundaries for the U.S. House of Representatives, the Indiana House of Representatives and the Indiana Senate, is now live and available online at iga.in.gov/redistricting. The web portal contains all the same census and election data lawmakers will have access to as they draw the new Statehouse and congressional district maps.
"This portal is a great opportunity for Hoosiers to share their proposed maps with lawmakers," Bray said. "We hope to see citizens take advantage of this portal as we prepare to return to session."
Informational resources, including instructional videos on how to use the software, can be found on the state's redistricting website at iga.in.gov/redistricting. In addition, 19 Ivy Tech campuses are offering free, on-site assistance to anyone who needs help using the portal. Campus information and details can also be found on the website.
Indiana is required by state and federal law to redraw Indiana's legislative and congressional maps following the nationwide census every 10 years.
"Our new census data shows many changes to our state's population over the last 10 years and that's why the redistricting process is so important," Huston said. "As a representative democracy, we need to make sure constituents' voices are heard."
Tentative Redistricting Timeline
The initial drafts of the maps for the U.S. House of Representatives and Indiana House of Representatives districts are expected to be posted online at iga.in.gov on Sept. 14.
State Rep. Tim Wesco (R-Osceola), chair of the House Committee on Elections and Apportionment, plans to host committee meetings to gather public feedback on the initial drafts of the two maps on Sept. 15 and 16 in the House Chamber of the Statehouse. The committee is expected to meet again the morning of Sept. 20 for an amend-and-vote-only meeting. The full House is expected to reconvene to vote on the adoption of the committee report that same day. House lawmakers plan to then return to the Statehouse Sept. 22 and 23 for second and third reading, respectively. House committee and session meeting details will be posted online at iga.in.gov once available.
The initial drafts of the Senate maps are expected to be posted online at iga.in.gov on Sept. 21.
State Sen. Jon Ford (R-Terre Haute), chair of the Senate Committee on Elections, plans to host a public meeting of the committee to gather public feedback on the maps on Sept. 27. The committee is expected to meet again Sept. 28 for an amend-and-vote-only meeting. The full Senate is expected to meet Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 for second and third reading, respectively. Senate committee and session meeting details will be posted online at iga.in.gov once available.
More Background
In early August, legislators hosted public meetings in Indiana's nine congressional districts to gather feedback from the public on Indiana's redistricting process. Archived videos of the meetings are available at iga.in.gov/redistricting.
