STATEHOUSE – State Representative Randy Frye (R-Greensburg) authored a bill to benefit Hoosier motorists. House Bill (HB) 1025 would allow the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to issue a driver’s license if an individual’s license has been suspended by another state but they have satisfied the conditions of the violation. Tuesday, the bill passed unanimously out of the House of Representatives and will now go to the Senate for further consideration and debate.
Under statute, Indiana participates in the Driver’s License Compact, which is a database that allows participating states to access data on traffic violations that drivers have in other states. However, when a driver satisfies the conditions of the violation, their name is not always removed from the database.
“This issue was brought to me by some of my constituents,” said Rep. Frye. “We obviously do not want someone who has a serious, uncorrected violation in another state coming to Indiana and easily obtaining a driver’s license. However, I do not feel that Hoosiers should suffer due to poor database upkeep on the part of another state. I am confident that this legislation balances the need for stringent oversight with the need to allow citizens a means to appeal outdated information.”
This legislation would allow citizens to appeal to the BMV without having to pay for an attorney.
