STATEHOUSE (March 19, 2021) – Legislation to fully fund students attending school virtually due to COVID-19 could soon be law, according to State Rep. Brad Barrett (R-Richmond).

Under current law, public schools receive 85% of tuition support per virtual student, which is defined as a child learning 50% or more of their instruction online. Barrett voted for the legislation in order to provide 100% of the state's tuition support for students at public schools who have gone to virtual instruction for part or all of the 2020-2021 academic year, so long as those students were not already learning virtually prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Our educators and school staff worked hard, overcoming many obstacles to ensure students continued learning during the COVID-19 outbreak," Barrett said. "Fully funding our students is a top priority for lawmakers this session, and this legislation is now one step closer to becoming law and providing our schools more financial support."

Senate Enrolled Act 2 is now with the governor for consideration as a new law. Visit iga.in.gov to learn more.
